Forest Hill is rich in Real Estate History: Forest Hill was named after the summer
residence of John Wickson which was built in 1860 at the intersection of Eglinton Avenue and Old Forest Hill
Road at the north end of what is now Lower Forest Hill Real Estate. As aforementioned the Upper Forest Hill district encompasses several blocks to the north but it is the district to
the south which is considered to be one of the most prestigious neighbourhoods
in Toronto.
When we look back at the history
of Toronto during the latter half of the 1800`s and early 1900`s many established Families owned large tracts of
Forest Hill Land. As Toronto grew these large tracts were parceled off
and in 1923 the area evolved into the community becoming the Village of Forest Hill. To beautify the development of the area Homeowners
were obligated to plant at least one tree in the front garden of their quality-built luxurious homes.
As was the upscale trend at the time the goal was to build a Village which would rival the best in the vicinity
of downtown Toronto. An oversized property is the norm for a Forest
Hill Mansion located in this premium residential neighbourhood south of Eglinton Avenue. Forest
Hill Mansions in this area have price tags that exceed several million dollars. Prestige is indeed
a descriptive adjective for Forest Hill Living in Toronto.
The Village of Forest Hill kept it’s independence from the City of Toronto while neighbourhoods of the city surrounded it. It
was only in 1967 that the village was annexed and became amalgamated with the City of Toronto.
FOREST HILL ARCHITECTURE & MORE FOREST HILL HISTORY In the 1800`s the majority of
home owners in the Forest Hill neighbourhood originated from Britain
and as such Georgian, Victorian, Romanesque, Gothic and
Tudor architectural designs were imported.
As has been witnessed throughout the
various building and renovation booms, many new home owners have completed extensive renovations
on the large stately properties and estates and in many cases have kept current
with modern day advances in technology: e.g. home additions, both indoor swimming pools and outdoor swimming pools,
fitness centers, exercise
rooms, electrical and plumbing upgrades, etc. To thwart the trend to tear down these stately homes and
rebuild more modern designs some Forest Hill Homes have achieved historical heritage designation
and all or parts of these homes are civically protected from destruction.
The existing Forest Hill Community’s concern is not so much in stifling the modernization
of the existing homes but rather with the complete demolition and building new modern day designs that do not fit with the
stately character which the area is renowned for.

Several blocks to the east is Yonge Street, which being the longest street in the world, also offers
